Intra-office shenanigans

Twelve of us in the office act busy at our computers while keeping one eye on the target as he enters the room and makes his way to the trap armed at his desk. Without alarming the target, everyone tries to smoothly jockey for a clear view of the explosion that is moments away. It’ll Never Happen to Me

That’s the prevailing mindset of students that show up at the USAF SERE School. They say, “Other people get shot down or captured, but not me. It’ll never happen to me”. They’re here because the training is part of their pipeline; it’s required for their job. They’re here to check the box and move on. They go through the motions, but it’s not authentic. Intro

Fire saved my life. In fact, during the 6 months of training to be a SERE Specialist, there were only a handful of times that I wasn’t cold, wet, hungry and sleep deprived. On some phases of training, fire was intentionally withheld so we could experience what it was like to suffer without it. Fire changes your life. Cooking food, sterilizing water, heating, signaling, tool-making and morale to name a few. For our safety throughout training, our instructors mandated that we keep two things on our belt at all times: one was a knife, the other was a metal match. Continue reading METAL MATCH
